Organic geochemistry laboratory
The laboratory is dedicated to provide facilities for organic geochemical studies of fossil fuels, hydrocarbon source rocks and environmental samples aiming at scientific and educational purposes. The laboratory enables users extraction of solid samples with liquid phase in Soxhlet apparatus, ultrasonically or using accelerated high-pressure extraction (Thermo Scientific Dionex ASE apparatus). The last technique enables one quick extraction of samples in a larger series. Solvent extracted fractions can be separated into maltenes and asphaltenes, and these can be further separated with column (CC) or thin layer chromatography (TLC) to the desired type of the GC-enabled fractions. The laboratory is equipped with gas chromatograph (Agilent GC 7890B series) fitted with capillary columns (either DB-5 or DB-35) with FID and FPD detection dedicated to organic sulfur compounds for checking the separation efficiency at site.
In addition, kerogen can be separated with inorganic acids according to standard procedure, e.g., for microscopy or infrared spectroscopy etc.
